Imperial Russian Smoky Caravan Traditional Loose Leaf Smoked Black Tea

£2.50

This delightful tea for those who love a Smoky tea is a blend of Darjeeling, Ceylon, Keemun and obviously Lapsang Souchong. It makes for a quite dark infusion with a well-balanced flavour and a definite smoky after taste. In 1638 a Mongolian ruler donated 250lb of tea to Tsar Michael 1, the envoy who received this initially refused the gift of dead leaves, but the Khan insisted. By 1679, Russia concluded a treaty on regular tea supplies via Camel Caravans in exchange for furs. 10 years later the Treaty of Nerchinsk was signed proclaiming sovereignty over Siberia and allowing for the creation of the Tea Road between Russia and China. This Tea Road ran from Moscow to Kyakhta where it then met with the Camel Caravan that came from Zhangjiakou on the Great Wall. Zhangjiakou has been a stronghold of military significance since ancient times and is given the nickname The Northern Gate of Beijing.
