This unusual native European plant Ruscus aculeatus, occurs in woodlands and hedgerows, where it is tolerant of deep shade. The rhizomes or ‘roots’ have been used since ancient times, Greek physicians Asclepius and Hippocrates, prescribed it as a laxative or diuretic, and also believed it to remove kidney stones when added to wine. In more recent times it has also been recommended as a treatment for haemorrhoids, gallstones, hardening of the arteries, and for symptoms of poor circulation, such as pain, heaviness, leg cramps, leg swelling, and varicose veins. Butcher’s Boom tea has also been used to reduce swelling and to speed the recovery of fractures. The common name comes from the practice of using their stiff branches to make small brooms that were used for cleaning wooden butchering blocks. Recent research has reave led that Butcher’s Broom contains antibacterial compounds.

It goes without saying that if you're pregnant (or are under the doctor for anything) caution should be exercised with herbal decoctions.
