Dandelion and Burdock is a beverage consumed in the British Isles since the Middle Ages and was originally a type of light mead. Other lightly fermented Root Beers, such as Sarsaparilla, were often drunk for their health-giving properties. A Huddersfield businessman, Ben Shaw, founded a company specifically to make and sell D & B which the company did between 1871 and 1993, when it was bought out. Fentimans make a version using naturally brewed ingredients and use extracts of both Dandelion and Burdock (although its main ingredients are sugar and pear juice concentrate). A G Barr in Scotland as well as producing Irn-Bru also make a soft drink called D’n’B with the slogan ‘Tall, dark and drinksome’. The last UK original temperance bar, Fitzpatrick’s in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, which opened in 1890, still makes its D & B to an original Irish recipe. And there’s an apocryphal story regarding the origin of D & B that states it was created by St. Thomas Aquinas in the 13th Century. All fascinating information courtesy of Wikipedia.
