British Missionaries in 1885 were the first to introduce coffee growing to Burma. It was not a successful venture and was left alone until the 1930’s when Catholic Missionaries introduced Arabica coffee plants to the Shan States. The coffee industry was slow to establish until around 2003 when political change allowed a greater incentive for investment. Production doubled within the following decade. The main varieties grown in Burma are Catuai, Caturra, S795, a variety from Sulawesi previously Celebes. The coffee is grown at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,600 metres and is picked by hand.  The S795 cultivar is probably the most commonly planted Arabica variety in Southeast Asia and India. It is known for its balanced cup and subtle flavour notes of mocha. Released during the 1940’s it is a cross between the Kent and S288 cultivars.
