Kanchanjangha Tea Estate (KTE) and Research Centre was established with the objective of improving the living standard of the farmers in the remote villages, by increasing income without exploiting or disturbing nature. Located at Ranitar in the remote region of Panchthar within the foothills of Mount Kanchanjangha. KTE introduced the Cow Bank Project in 2005. Initially distributing 36 high yielding cows and a bull to the villagers, one cow per house. A second phase allowed a further 66 cows to be distributed. The farmers can sell excess milk in the market and sell back cow dung to the KTE. Any calves are given back to the KTE for distribution to other farmers. KTE is also heavily involved in Scholarships Programs specially to promote literacy in girls. A School Rebuild project for the old Kalika School.
