Most African estate teas are of good quality and have an Assam-like feel to them. They comprise good strong tasting black teas that drink well with milk. They are perfect for the morning cuppa -it is said that the Queen drinks African tea. Tea plantations were started with introduced Camellia sinensis plants, but Africa also has its indigenous 'tea' - Rooibos. Tea growing is having a bit of a revival in Africa with a lot of the plantations producing remarkably good, single estate, rarities. Kenya and East Africa are the major producers but look out for quality teas from KwaZulu Natal, Malawi, Tanzania and Rwanda. Our Favourite Estate in Malawi is the Satemwa Estate in Thyolo, Malawi. The picture of tea-leaves being plucked is from this particular Tea Garden in Malawi.
